Right-Angle Triangles

One of the most important concepts in mathematics is the right-angle triangle. It is a central component of Algebra, Geometry and Trigonometry.  So, it is important to fully understand all aspects of the right-angle triangle, especially the Pythagorean Theorem.

In the triangle below, angle x is a right angle which equals 90o . Right angles are always 90o and they are often marked with a square to denote that they are right angles. A right angle means that the two sides are perpendicular, like walls and floors, or walls and ceilings (in most cases, if the builders are good!!).

In any right-angle triangle, the longest side, that is, the side opposite the right angle is called the hypotenuse.  The Pythagorean Theorem is often expressed as:

The square of the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the squares of the other two sides.

In the triangle below that means:

             c2 = a2 + b2

Engrave this formula into your brain, because you will use it often throughout your study of mathematics.
